A carved wooden door has more surface detail than a flat factory door, which means care should be gentle and consistent. The goal is to remove dust and residue without damaging the finish or allowing moisture to remain in recessed carving.
This guide applies broadly to artisan doors like those in our Moroccan wooden door collection.
Dust regularly
Use a soft dry cloth on broad surfaces and a soft brush for recessed carving. Regular dusting is easier and safer than allowing heavy buildup that later requires aggressive cleaning.
Use minimal moisture
If a damp cloth is needed, use it lightly and dry the surface afterward. Avoid soaking carved areas where water can remain in grooves or around hardware.
Avoid harsh household cleaners
Strong chemicals can dull or alter wood finishes. Use products appropriate for the specific finish and test unfamiliar cleaners in an inconspicuous area first.
Pay attention to exterior exposure
Exterior doors face more sunlight, humidity, rain, and temperature change than interior doors. The finish and maintenance schedule should reflect that environment.
Inspect high-contact areas
Handles, lock zones, lower edges, and the area around the latch receive more contact. Wipe these areas gently and check for finish wear during routine cleaning.
Clean carved recesses carefully
A soft brush or clean microfiber cloth can reach patterns without scratching the wood. Avoid sharp tools that may damage edges or remove finish.
Check hinges and hardware
Heavy solid wood doors place load on hinges. If alignment changes or hardware loosens, have the installation checked rather than forcing the door.
Watch for rubbing or sticking
Wood can respond to environmental changes. If the door begins rubbing strongly against the frame, identify the cause before sanding or modifying the edge.
Protect the finish
Some wooden doors benefit from periodic maintenance appropriate to their original finish. Because oils, waxes, stains, and coatings behave differently, use a product compatible with the existing surface rather than applying a generic treatment.
Care begins with correct installation
A well-fitted door is less likely to scrape, twist, or put unnecessary stress on hardware. For measurement and ordering guidance, see our custom wooden door guide.
