Measure the available wall width
Record the full wall section, then subtract the space needed around doors, windows, switches, radiators, trim, and nearby furniture. Leaving some breathing room around a cabinet usually looks more intentional than filling every inch.
Depth is often the most important measurement
In hallways and entryways, depth determines whether the piece interferes with circulation. In living and dining rooms, greater depth can add useful storage but may project farther into the room than expected.
Choose height from how the top will be used
A lower cabinet can double as a display surface for lamps, art, trays, or sculpture. A taller cabinet increases vertical storage but may compete with windows or wall art.
Allow for door-opening clearance
Measure the swing of cabinet doors as well as the cabinet body. A piece can fit the wall yet become awkward if its doors collide with furniture or block a passage.
